SHAW FACES ROAD TEST AT FAYETTEVILLE STATE IN VOLLEYBALL MONDAY

RALEIGH, N.C.  – Coming off an intense 3-2 victory over Winston-Salem State University Thursday, Oct. 5, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will continue their division slate with a road contest at Fayetteville State University on Monday, Oct. 9 at the Felton J. Capel Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

The contest will offer live video on www.shawbears.com.

The Lady Bears (17-2, 9-0 CIAA, 3-0 South) will have their work cut out for them Monday as Shaw will take on division foe Fayetteville State, a team that stands 12-6 overall, 8-1 in the league and 2-1 in division standings. In their last outing, the Lady Bears had three chart double figures in kills led by junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) with 12, following junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and junior Jazmine Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA) with 11 kills apiece.

For the season, Klink has been a force on both sides of the stat sheet, posting a team-best .368 hitting percentage, which ranks second in the CIAA, while leading the squad with 2.60 kills per set.  The 5-foot-10 middle hitter also occupies the fifth spot in the CIAA this week with a .92 blocks per set.

As a team, Shaw ranks atop in the conference in total kills (390), kills per set (12.58), assists (349) and assists per set (11.26).

Fayetteville State will be looking to put the brakes on the Lady Bears, having split the season series last year before Shaw took home the conference crown in the championship match with a 3-0 sweep over the Lady Broncos. FSU is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Claflin Friday, Oct. 6.  In that contest, the Lady Broncos offensive attack was anchored by Arlicia Ortiz's nine kills and nine digs while Ziyanna Canty handed out 13 assist.

FSU currently owns a seven-game win-streak and 3-1 record at home so far on the season.

Following Monday's clash, Shaw will travel to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's on Thursday, Oct. 12 for a 6 p.m. match.
