PETERSBURG, Va. - The Shaw University women's volleyball team swept Elizabeth City State University, 3-0 and edged Virginia State University, 3-2, day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the VSU Multipurpose Center Saturday.
The Lady Bears now stand 14-2 overall and 6-0 against CIAA opponents. In addition, Shaw has now extended its win-streak to 10-straight, posting a 6-2 record in neutral sites and 4-0 mark on the road.
Against ECSU (2-14, 2-5 CIAA), the Lady Bears posted the 3-0 victory over the Lady Vikings after claiming a 25-5 victory in set one, 25-12 win in the second frame and a 25-17 tilt in the third. Junior Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) led the effort with 12 kills, junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) added 10 kills while junior Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) dished out 24 assists. Senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) finished with 14 stops defensively for the Lady Bears.
In a five-set thriller nightcap, the Lady Bears came back from a 2-0 deficit after falling 25-19 in the first set and 26-24 in the second frame. Shaw took an 8-3 lead in the third set, led by a service ace for Klink. VSU tied the game at 9-9 before taking the lead. After two more ties down the stretch, Shaw groomed a three-point lead (20-17) and would not relent on the lead for the 25-20 set win.
The Lady Bears owned a 11-2 advantage in the fourth set led by Klink who registered three in that run. VSU (3-12, 3-3 CIAA) pulled within five but that would be the closest they would get as Shaw held the Trojans to just seven points for remainder of the set for the 25-12 win.
In the fifth stanza, VSU had a 6-3 lead caused by the Lady Bears miscues but Shaw recovered to even the score at 5-5. Shaw would eventually reclaim the lead thanks to two errors by the Trojans that would eventually embark on a 7-3 lead (14-9) as the final point and match win came from a kill of Klink.
Klink finished with a match-high 15 kills and five blocks, followed by Wattley and Murphy who both charted 10 kills apiece. Olmeda-Gonzalez recorded 27 assists and sophomore Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) poured in 16 dimes. Murphy registered a match-high 22 digs while Brooks finished with 18 stops, Masnica added 12 and Wattley with seven.
The Lady Bears will return to action Sunday, Oct. 1 to face Bowie State University at 11 a.m. to conclude the CIAA round-up.
