SHAW SWEEPS JOHNSON C. SMITH, 3-0; REMAINS UNBEATEN IN CIAA ACTION

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team kept their Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) record unblemished with a 3-0 sweep over Johnson C. Smith University. The Lady Bears now stand 13-2 overall, 5-0 in conference play and 2-0 in the South. JCSU drops to 6-2 overall, 4-1 in the league and 1-1 in the division.

Junior tandem Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) and Kelly Murphy ((Mukwonago, WI) led the Lady Bears in kills with nine each. Both Klink and Murphy added a service ace and 6 digs apiece.  Junior Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) chipped in eight kills, seven digs and two blocks. Senior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) added a service ace while pacing Shaw with a match-high 15 digs.  Junior Michele Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) registered seven digs while leading the Lady Bears with a match-high 19 assists.

Shaw finished the match with an attacking percentage of .219 while limiting JCSU to a .000 percentage. Shaw completed the sweep with wins of 25-19, 25-18 and a dominating third and final set of 25-8.

The Lady Bears would jump out to leads of 3-0 and 5-0 in the first set. JCSU would be forced to take a timeout facing a 12-7 deficit.  Shaw would then run out to a 21-11 lead forcing another JCSU timeout. The Golden Bulls would respond to trim the Shaw lead to 24-17 forcing the Lady Bears to burn a timeout. A service error on JCSU would give Shaw the deciding set point for the 25-17 win.

Shaw would find themselves trailing early in the second set 3-1 before clawing their way back to take a 6-4 lead. The set would be knotted up at 7-7 before the Lady Bears ran out to a 14-9 lead forcing a JCSU timeout. The Golden Bulls pulled within 23-17 before the Shaw closed out the set for the 25-18 win.

The third set was all Shaw as the Lady Bears jumped out to leads of 7-1 and 13-2. A JCSU timeout would not be enough to cool off Shaw as they pushed their lead to 17-5 and 21-7 before completing the sweep with the 25-8 set victory.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 30 for the CIAA volleyball round-up in Petersburg, Va., hosted by Virginia State University. Shaw is slated to face Elizabeth City State at 12 p.m., followed by VSU at 6 p.m. On Sunday, the Lady Bears will conclude the round-up with a 11 a.m. contest versus Bowie State.
