BEHIND THREE TITLES, SHAW WOMEN FINISH FOURTH AT CIAA OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's outdoor track and field team closed the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with eight podium performances. The Lady Bears claimed three event titles en route to a fourth-place showing with 83 points on Saturday, May 6 at the Bowie State University Track and Field Complex.

 

The last time Shaw finished in the top-four amongst the CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships was in 2008.

 

The Lady Bears performances were highlighted on Saturday by junior La'Cherie Clarke (Raleigh, NC) who won the 100-meter title with a time of 12.04. She also grabbed a bronze medal in the 200-meter at 24.46. Sophomore Kaydi-Ann Wint (Kingston, Jamaica) was a victor of the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line with a clinching time of 2:14.94.

 

In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Kyla Sanders (Hampton, VA) tabbed third overall after a completion time of 1:05.63 while sophomore Tiarra Derosa (Sandy's, Bermuda) took home second place in the discus with a throw of 46.63m.

 

On day one, Shaw had three athletes finish in the top-three that included a first-place finish from freshman Tyefah Saunders (Kingston, Jamaica) in the javelin, and two second-place finishes from Saunders (shot put) and Wint (1500-meter).

 

Saint Augustine's claimed the 2018 CIAA women's outdoor track and field title with a total of 157 points while Virginia State (115) and Bowie State (87.5) finished second and third, respectively.
