SHAW LADY BEARS SIT SECOND AFTER DAY ONE OF CIAA OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

BOWIE, Md. – Shaw University women's outdoor track and field team opened up the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Bowie State University Track and Field Complex.

 

After the first day of action, the Lady Bears are in second place with 30 points behind Virginia State. The Trojans have 36 points heading into the final day of the meet while Winston-Salem State is currently third with 26 points and Saint Augustine has 25 points to round out the top-four.

 

SU's freshman Tyefah Saunders (Kingston, Jamaica) started off the day by winning gold in the javelin with a first-place toss of 42.20m. Saunders also tabbed second in the shot put with a throw of 14.00m. Additionally, sophomore Kaydi-Ann Wint (Kingston, Jamaica) earned a silver medal with a finish of 4:57.84 in the 1500m run.

 

With a total of three top-three finishes on day one, the Lady Bears have already surpassed last year's performance with just one bronze in the 100m dash.

 

Other Notable:

  • Sophomore Tiarra Derosa (Sandy's, Bermuda) placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 12.53m.
  • Junior La'Cherie Clarke (Raleigh, NC) ran a first-place time of 12.17 in the 100m preliminaries to compete in the finals on Sunday.
  • Clarke will also make an appearance in the finals of the 200m dash after producing a qualifying time of 24.54 – placing first in heat one.
  • Freshman Damoni Neal (Newport News, VA) placed ninth in the long jump (5.11m).
  • Wint place fifth in the 800m preliminaries with a time of 2:27.68 for a spot in the finals Sunday.
  • Junior Kyla Sanders (Hampton, VA) will make an appearance in the finals of the 400m hurdles after a qualifying time of 1:07.26. She placed second overall in heat one.

 

Saturday's events consisted mostly of preliminary races as teams positioned themselves in hunt of the 2018 conference titles on the final day. Day two of the CIAA Track and Field Championships will resume Sunday, May 6 with the field events scheduled to start at 9 a.m., followed by the running events at approximately 1 p.m.
