RALEIGH, N.C. – On Friday Apr. 6, the Shaw University women's outdoor track and field team will compete in Johnson C. Smith University's very own Invitational track meet in Charlotte, N.C. at the Irwin Belk Complex. The meet will feature approximately 23 teams, including conference opponents Livingstone, Saint Augustine's, Winston-Salem State and of course Johnson C. Smith.
Field events will begin at 4:00 p.m.; the women will lead off with the 4x100 meter relay, 800-meter run, and 100-meter hurdles followed by 110-meter hurdles prelims. On Saturday, events will kick off at 9:00 a.m. beginning with the discus throw.
The Lady Bears are coming off another impressive showing where sophomore Tiarra Derosa (Sandy's, Bermuda) provisionally qualified for nationals after a throw of 46.97m in the discus. Junior La'Cherie Clarke won the 200-meter race with a time of 25.67. Freshman Tyefah Saunders (Kingston, Jamaica) placed second in the shot put (12.99m).
In the 800 meter run, sophomore Kaydi-Ann Wint (Kingston, Jamaica) achieved a fifth place finish with a time of 2:18.11 – she currently leads the conference in that event. The Lady Bears broke a school record in the 4x400-meter relay after recording a 3:56.40, their best so far this season for a second place finish.
