RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's tennis continues to roll, extending their win-streak to 14-straight after claiming a 8-1 victory over Johnson C. Smith Friday afternoon at Worthdale Park.
The win sits the Lady Bears 14-1 on the year and 9-0 against conference opponents this season. The Golden Bulls fall to 11-9 overall and 7-2 in the league.
Shaw swept all three doubles matches and all but one singles to win. Daniela Vanko (Quebec, Montreal) and Marilyne Kamegne(Yaoundé, Cameroon) teamed up for a 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles, followed by Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) with a commanding a 8-0 frame at the No. 2 doubles. Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) and Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) would blank their opponents, 8-0 for the 3-0 lead early.
In singles, Vanko suffered a 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 setback at No. 1 singles but the Lady Bears would go on to win the remaining positions, including a 6-0, 6-0 win from Mantecon at N0. 2, Kamegne was a 6-2, 6-0 victor at No. 3 while Martic claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 and Aleem grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5. Fekete put a stamp on the match win for Shaw with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Shaw will return to action on Sunday, Apr. 9 with a road match at Winston-Salem State. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
