LADY BEARS FALL TO VIRGINIA STATE AT HOME, 64-47

RALEIGH, N.C.  A tough fourth quarter saw the Shaw University women's basketball fall at home 64-47 to the visiting Virginia State University Trojans at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 31 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division contest.

 

Sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds while junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) chipped in 10 points, five assists, two blocks, two rebounds and one steal.

 

The game was competitive in the first half with the Lady Bears (5-17, 2-8 CIAA) battling back from a seven-point deficit in the first quarter and six-point deficit in the second quarter but the Trojans used a 9-1 run starting at the 3:21 of the first half to go up 34-21 over Shaw at halftime.

 

VSU (18-2, 8-2 CIAA) outscored the Lady Bears 18-12 in the third quarter and manufactured a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to propel for the win. Alexis Smith scored a game-high 21 points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists while Dionna Marcus added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans.

 

The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 with their annual Think Pink game against Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
