CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a highly anticipated softball doubleheader, the Shaw University Lady Bears split with Johnson C. Smith University (6-14, 4-6 CIAA) Wednesday afternoon in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division showdown. The Lady Bears (9-13, 7-3 CIAA) earned a hard-fought, 5-4 game one victory in seven innings to open the day, before dropping a 13-4 decision in game two in five innings.
In division standings, Shaw is now 3-1 while the Golden Bulls are 1-3. Both teams laced a total of 20 hits between the two games but Shaw was outscored 17-9 for the day.
The game one victory marked the Lady Bears seventh conference win this season – program best since the 2013 as the SU got runs in the contest from senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island), junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI), senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) and two from junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC).
The Lady Bears erased a 4-0 deficit by getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth after JSCU walked Fahie with the bases loaded, allowing Perry to score. A single from Ngeve to centerfield started a run for the Lady Bears in the top of the fifth. After two runs scored for SU, a fielder's choice provided another run for Shaw, following a double from senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) that allowed Ngeve to come home and SU to ultimately escape with the 5-4 frame.
Ngeve led the offensive attack in game one, going 2-of-3 from the plate and two runs. Perry tossed up seven innings of work, earning her fifth win in the circle this season to improve to 5-1 on the year.
In game two, the Lady Bears trailed 3-2 to JCSU after one complete inning but the Shaw tied the game at 4-4 when senior Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA) scored on a miscue from the Golden Bulls. Momentum quickly shifted in favor of JCSU in the bottom third after the Lady Bears went scoreless in the top. The Golden Bulls produced six singles and one double to put up eight runs in the third inning as JCSU went ahead 11-3 over Shaw heading into the fourth inning.
Shaw could not get anything going in the top of the fourth, meanwhile JCSU added two more runs to extend their lead 13-3 in route to the five-inning rule despite the Lady Bears one run in the top fifth. Seven different player were responsible for at least one hit by the Lady Bears but Rogers led the way on a 3-3 performance, an RBI and one run.
Sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) took the loss after walking three, allowing seven earned runs and striking out one.
Shaw will continue division play and return home to host rival Saint Augustine's University on Saturday, Apr. 14 at Worthdale Park. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
