NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Shaw University softball team lost their first two games in the Fastpitch Dreams Classic on Sunday, Mar. 10. The Lady Bears fell to Spalding, 7-4 and St. Scholastica, 7-0. The losses were the first meetings against either opponent for Shaw as the setbacks dip the Lady Bears to 1-9 overall.
Shaw 4, Spalding, 7
The Lady Bears trailed a 6-0 after the first inning; three of the Golden Eagles (1-3) runs were unearned. Shaw rebounded by scoring three runs in the top of the third inning led by a single from Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) and a double from junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC).
The Lady Bears then added one more in the top of the fourth but Spalding tallied one in the bottom of the sixth that would end the game 7-4.
Lewis led the offensive attack, going 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run. Sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucsan, AZ) also went 3-of-4 at bat and scored one run.
Senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) allowed seven runs and walked three but struck out a season-high six batters, suffering the loss on the mound.
Shaw 0, St. Scholastica 7
St. Scholastica (2-7) stuck first against the Lady Bears, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning and then two in the second before adding one more in the fifth as Shaw went scoreless throughout the contest. The Lady Bears batted 23 times but was only able to record just four hits for the game.
Ortiz took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 hits, seven runs, walking one and striking out one.
