CARY, N.C. – On the final day of the 2018 Shaw University Softball Challenge, the Lady Bears fell 12-7 to Mansfield University Saturday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park. The loss dips Shaw to 1-7 overall while Mansfield improves to 2-3 overall.
Despite the loss, the Lady Bears offensive game has showed improved over the last few games. Shaw recorded a season-high 10 hits and matched a game-high five RBI against Mansfield.
Shaw owned a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Mountaineers rebounded with three runs to take a 3-2 lead after one complete inning. The Lady Bears couldn't get anything going in the top of the second as the MU tallied three singles to go ahead 6-3 heading into the third inning.
A single through the right side extended the Mountaineers lead 7-2 over Shaw before they plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lady Bears showed resilience by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth and three runs in the top of the sixth to pull within 10-7 but the Mountaineers added two to the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh that would seal the deal for Shaw's comeback.
Junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) led the efforts for Shaw offensively, going 2-of-3 from the plate and two RBI while junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) went 2-of-4 for two RBI and senior Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) finished 2-of-4 and an RBI.
Sophomore Amanada Ortiz (Tuscan, AZ) scored a game-high three runs while senior Erica Kiessling (Fuquay-Varina, NC) scored twice.
Senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) suffered the loss on the mound for Shaw. She allowed 21 hits, striking out two and walking one.
Shaw will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 11 at the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Lady Bears will play six different teams over the next three days.
