COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Shaw University softball team fell to Benedict College, 9-0 and 10-2 in their 2018 season opener Friday. The loss drops the Lady Bears to 0-2 on the season. The doubleheader was second contest for the Lady Tigers who improves to 4-0.
Shaw was hitless in the first game, suffering a 9-0 decision in five innings before falling 10-2 in the second game also in five innings. The Lady Bears scored their first run of the second contest on a single from junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) that scored senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands). Senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) earned her first RBI of the season, bringing home sophomore Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) to put Shaw ahead 2-0 but Benedict responded with two runs in the bottom of the first before posting eight runs in the second.
Sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) was the losing pitcher of the first game while Fahie took the loss on the mound in the second game.
Shaw will return to the field on Feb. 18 at Meredith College for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
