FOOTBALL TRAVELS TO BOWIE STATE FOR CONFERENCE OPENER ON SATURDAY

RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off a 34-27 victory over Malone University last weekend, the Shaw University football team will continue their 2017 season and open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference (CIAA) action by traveling to Bowie, Md., to face the Bowie State University Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Bulldog Stadium.

The Series / Last Meeting:
Saturday's contest will be the 11th time both teams will meet on the gridiron as the all-time series is tied at 5-5 overall. The last time these two teams met was on Sept. 24, 2016 in Durham, N.C. where the Bears suffered a 55-14 setback to the visiting Bulldogs.

Bowie State finished with 555 total offenses, including 209 on the ground and 346 through the air, while Shaw tallied 251 total yards of offense, 102 rushing and 149 passing. Quarterback Vidal Woodruff (Tampa, FL) threw for 137 yards and one touchdown but BSU's star quarterback Amir Hall threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns to the Bulldogs to the win.


The Teams:
Shaw (1-2) will look to carry their winning momentum into Saturday's matchup with the Bulldogs after a fast offensive start against Malone last weekend. The Bears produced a total of 458 yards, including 224 rushing and 234 passing led by Woodruff who started for the first time in his career and hauled in 25-of-35 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) recorded two touchdowns on six receptions while Junior running back Michael Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) carried the load on the ground with 19 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) hauled in 85 yards and one touchdown on seven receptions.

Defensively, freshman defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) recorded a team-best and career-high 11 tackles (10 solo) and two tackle for losses, while sophomore linebacker Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) grabbed nine tackles (8 solo ) and a quarterback hurry.


Bowie State (3-0) had no trouble on the road at Saint Augustine's last weekend as the Bulldogs downed the Falcons, 66-20. Hall and Robert Chesson led the offense with 433 passing yards and 130 rushing yards, respectively. Brandon Britton recorded 185 reception yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Roger Richardson grabbed six tackles.


BSU currently ranks No. 22 in the AFCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll.


CIAA Weekly Honors:
Coach Jones and Scroggins of Shaw University football was named the CIAA Football Coach, Rookie and Defensive Back of the Week on Monday. Bowie State also had three players receive CIAA honors, including Diontae Jordan whom was named Offensive Lineman of the week, Hall earned Quarterback of the Week and Britton was chosen as Receiver of the Week.
